With prescription drug abuse out of control, many companies now choose to test for more than the 5 main classes of drugs in a standard 5 Panel test—which typically includes marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP and opiates (morphine, codeine, and often heroin). But when you include tests for things.

And it happens. Legit question.

In fact, many of the big labs out there are perfectly willing to sell drug tests to companies that don’t use an MRO. With a legitimate prescription, the MRO will report the result as a negative. If you have a prescription for it, you should have been contacted by an MRO to explain why. Assuming they did a 10 panel drug test which includes barbiturates, that is what probably flagged positive. Many irresponsible companies are not using an MRO.

Even if you pass the drug test, you should consult your employer’s drug policy.

Certain medications can sometimes cause a positive result. In the event that the initial screen and confirmation test are both positive, MRO, a licensed medical doctor who has special training in the area of substance abuse, then reviews the results, makes sure the chain-of-custody procedures were followed, and contacts the individual to make sure there are no medical or other reasons for the result.
